ANTIHERO by C.J. Pinard ~Excerpt~
I answered the door to see Talia
standing there in a white flowy-looking sundress and those damn cowboy boots
that drove me crazy. Her hair was down, the wild curls falling around her face.
As usual, she didn’t have on much makeup, but her pretty pink lips were all
shiny. I felt myself stiffen in my pants.
She walked in and put her arms
around me and smiled. “I’ve missed you.”
I chuckled, kissing the top of
her head. “You just saw me this morning.”
“I know,” she laughed. “Are you
ready?”
I nodded, patting myself down to
make sure I had my keys, phone, and wallet. Check, check, check.
We walked out into the parking
area, and when I saw her car parked next to mine, I said, “Your car is locked,
right?”
She rolled her eyes and smiled.
“Yes, dad.”
I grabbed her hand and kissed it.
“Don’t sass me, or I’ll have to spank you.”
“Promise?” she asked, a
mischievous glint in her pretty eyes.
We walked to the restaurant we’d
agreed on earlier. It was only a few blocks from my house, and it was a nice
night. She planned on staying over, so her coming to meet me here just made
sense.
I held her hand as we walked, the
warm night not too hot and not cold, just perfect. She told me some more about
her mom and a younger brother who had received a college scholarship and was
living somewhere out west to get his degree. I talked to her about my mom and
stepdad and told her I wanted her to meet them one day. That made her smile. I
finally opened up about my visit with Harper Mathis and the job prospects she’d
given me. She looked so happy, I tried to memorize her face.
“Ellis Anderson?”
We turned around slowly when a
male voice said my name with an authority I recognized. Two Tampa P.D. officers
were standing there, looking stern.
“Yes, sir?”
The larger of the two walked over
and pulled out a pair of handcuffs. “Sorry, son, but you’re under arrest for
the assault and battery of Justin Silver.”
“Fuck,” I muttered. I didn’t even
need to ask. That pussy bitch had pressed charges.
“Oh, my God! No, please don’t,”
Talia cried, seeming to know why I was being put in cuffs. “That thug attacked
us first!”
The shorter of the two officers
paused for a minute, but only said, “Ma’am, please step away, we have to take
him in.”
Talia was crying now, dammit. The
officer took mercy on her and handed her a card. “He’s being taken here. He can
probably make bail, but call that number and they will let you know.”
She took the card but kept
looking at me as the cops walked me to their waiting car, putting me into the
backseat. I gave no resistance, as I knew they were just doing their job. I
could only hope to claim self-defense. There go my chances with that job.
Fuck my life...
I turned around to see Talia
standing in the street with the glare from the streetlamps illuminating the
tears streaming down her cheeks. I swallowed the lump in my throat and shook my
head. If that shitbag is out and I’m going to jail, I’m gonna find his ass when
I make bail and he’s gonna face the wrath of LT.

The Biker's Secret Torment by Lisa Ladew
I stalked down the darkening
campus sidewalk, my thoughts on overdrive. Why was it, that spending years away
from him had done nothing to lessen the impact those dark eyes and that
brooding smirk had on me?
I'd turned in my Human Physiology
final, then nearly swallowed my tongue when I walked out of the exam room into
the lobby of the building and saw him on the tiny TV in the corner. They'd only
showed him from a distance, but I knew it was him. Only one member of my dad's
MC wore a beanie pulled low, swaggered like that, and filled out a Mad Marauders
MC cut like that. My heartbeat had tripled as I rushed to the TV and turned the
sound up, my eyes plastered on the fiery Viking helmet and sword in the center
patch. I clenched my teeth as I listened to the reporter's human interest
bullshit. Before he disappeared into the clubhouse, I realized he wasn't
limping. What in the hell did that mean?
The piece had only lasted another
few seconds, but after I saw it I had run out onto campus, shaking with anger
for him. They didn't use his name, but some smartass reporter had dug up his
past and was now trying to use it to further her career. I wondered if she had
contacted him yet. Asked him for an interview. If she had, I wondered how that
fuck you had tasted to her.
I took a left between two
buildings in the fading evening light, practically running towards my dorm. But
when I got there, I couldn't go inside. What if Sloane was in there? I couldn't
fucking deal with her right now. Her special bitch senses would start tingling
the second I walked in the door and she would pounce on me, knowing I was
upset. No way. I had one more final tomorrow, and then I was done with school
for almost a month. When I came back I would have a new roommate. If I never
talked to Sloane again, that would be fine with me, and I really couldn't deal
with her now.

DOG - By Bella Love-Wins
Kim POV.
What had happened couldn't be
changed. Mom was dead, and I was there, in a random safe house that no one
really lived in, with five bikers.
One of whom was irresistibly hot.
Once I'd gotten dressed in the
only pair of pajamas I'd brought, I settled onto the bed and looked around the
room while I dried my hair. The bedside clock said that it was nearly one in
the morning. I didn't feel tired at all, my limbs instead full of a sensation
that couldn't be pinpointed. Nervousness? Fear?
A soft knock on the door made me
self-conscious.
“Yes?” I asked as I pulled a
knitted blanket over my legs. I was wearing short shorts I'd had since freshman
year in high school, and they didn't exactly cover up much anymore.
“It's Kane.”
I swallowed hard. “Come in.”
He opened the door hesitantly,
hanging back with his hand on the knob.
“You can come in,” I repeated. It
was odd to see him waiting for my approval to do something. I'd pegged him as
the kind of guy who was always working hard to show his status. Or maybe that
was just the way he was in front of the other members of the club.
“I'm sorry about all of this,” he
said, walking over to the bed and sitting just a foot away.
“It's not your fault.” I glanced
at him and then looked away quickly. That softness in his eyes was something
new. It was way too much to handle. God, he was so hot. Any time he was close
to me my entire body would practically be humming. It was as though his
presence alone made me come alive in a way I never had before.
What would he do if I made a
move? Kane was anything but my usual type. And yet that heat couldn't be
denied.
Suppose I was to have sex with
him. It would only be one time. Hell, maybe it would even be good for me. It
would get my mind off of the horrible circumstances of my life. Not only that,
it would show Kane that I was just as capable of calling the shots as he was.
The temptation to reach over and
grab his face or his crotch were still building up when he turned to me.
“Your dad just wants to protect
you.”
I sighed. This was so not the
conversation I'd been looking for. “He's done a shitty job of it so far. Just
ask my mother.”
Surprisingly, Kane pursed his
lips and nodded. “That's a legit way to feel.”
I crossed my arms, suddenly no
longer in the mood to make a move on him. “What's going to happen next?”
“We'll keep moving you around.
Make sure we don't stay in one place for too long.”
“Until when?”
“Until this thing with the
Arroyos Bandidos is settled.”
“I have school,” I spat.
“Doesn't your survival come
first? You can't go to school if you're dead.”
I bit my lip. Damn him. Damn him
and those smoking eyes. Damn him and that rough stubble, that square jaw, those
hard biceps popping out from underneath the hems of his shirt.
Before I knew it my hand was on
his shoulder. He didn't move, just looked at me, his gaze boring a hole into my
face. Eager to act before I chickened out, I leaned forward and brushed my lips
softly against his. He opened his mouth in a welcome as I kissed harder,
tasting the salt and reveling in the softness of his tongue when it slipped out
between his lips.
I shifted my weight, letting the
blanket drop to the floor. Finally having decided to just go for it, I raised
up onto my knees. He responded by grasping my waist and swinging me around to
straddle his lap, never breaking the contact of our lips for an instant.
His hands trailed up to the back
of my head, winding their way through my damp hair. When I turned my face to
the side to get at a better angle for kissing I pushed my weight forward,
pressing my crotch against his. A deep growl that seemed to come up from the
very earth traveled through Kane's body and escaped his mouth only to make my
own lips hum with the reverberations.
I broke off the kiss with a heavy
gasp, keeping my face still close to his.
“This is just sex,” I whispered.

Taming The Biker by Cassie Alexandra.
It was the sound of my cell phone
buzzing that woke me from a dead sleep. Groaning from the sharp pain in my temples,
I opened one eye and reached clumsily for the phone. As I did, an arm encircled
my waist and pulled me backwards into warm, solid maleness.
Shocked, I stiffened up. Who in
the hell is that?!
“Relax,” murmured a gravelly
voice against my neck. His mouth moved up and he nipped my earlobe with his
teeth, making me shiver. “Whoever it is can wait, but as you can probably tell…
I can’t.”
My eyes wide open now, they
darted around the darkness. I was definitely in my hotel room, which brought me
no relief. I couldn’t just slip away.
He pressed his hips against my
bottom and there was no mistaking the raging hard-on rubbing against my cheeks.
“I need to be inside you, babe. You feel me?”
“Yeah,” I squeaked. I definitely
felt him.
Rough fingers reached up and
grabbed my breast. He tugged on my nipple. “God, you’re sexy,” he murmured.
I can’t do this, I thought, my
cheeks burning in shame. I didn’t do one-night stands. Not ever. But, last
night had been my sister’s wedding and obviously, I’d had far too much to
drink.
Taking a deep breath, I pried the
man’s fingers from my breast, and scooted out of his reach, pulling one of the
blankets with me.
“Hey, where you going?” he asked,
trying to reach for me again.
Covering myself, I quickly stood
up and turned on the lamp. When I finally got a good look at the muscular,
tattooed man lounging in my bed, I groaned at my own stupidity. In the back of
my mind, I knew it was him. I just didn’t want to believe it.
I sighed. “Taylor.”
He rubbed the side of his cheek.
“You look surprised.”
“Do I?” I mumbled, frustrated. I
wasn’t sure which made me angrier – the fact that I’d had sex with him, or the
fact that I couldn’t remember any of it.
Taylor patted the bed. “Why don’t
you get back into bed?”
“No.”
He tilted his head to the side.
“Why not?”
“I just… can’t.”
With a hard, feral grin, he
shoved the blanket away from his hips, exposing his impressive hard-on. “You
sure you don’t want to try?”
Seeing such a masculine, ripped
body naked and fully cocked, my womanhood spasmed with desire. “You’re… not
making this easy,” I admitted.
Taylor rolled over onto his back.
“Good. Now, get on, Lauren. You know you want to. I see it in your eyes,” he
said huskily.
At a loss for words, I was unable
to look away from his perfectly, chiseled body. He was certainly a beautiful
specimen and any fantasy that I might have ever had about Taylor Adams couldn’t
possibly measure up to the real deal.
He reached over and grabbed a
condom that was sitting on the nightstand. “If you want, we can use one of
these, this time.”
Shocked, I pried my eyes away
from his hips. “We didn’t use a condom?”
His eyes narrowed. “You said you
were on the pill.”

Forbidden by Sierra Rose Excerpt.
“I can’t stop thinking about
her,” I said.
“She’s off limits. You know that.
Her old man will shoot you dead. So stay the fuck away from that broad!”
“But I love a challenge…The more
I can’t have her, the more I want her.”
“C’mon, man. She’s forbidden
fruit.”
“I want to snatch that fruit off
that tree…and just take one taste.”
“Look what happened to Eve,” he
said. “Except she’ll make out better than you will. Because you’ll be dead when
her dad catches you sniffing around his precious princess. You can’t pursue a
doomed romance.”
“Is there such a thing as
forbidden soul mates?”
“That girl will rip your soul in
half.”
I laughed.
He sipped his beer. “There’s
never a dull moment with Selene.”
“No, there’s not.”
“But seriously? Is she worth
dying for? You need to ask yourself that question.”
“I’ve asked myself that question
a million times. And it’s why I stay away.”
“Then keep doing what you’re
doing. Because it’s good for your health. And why do you want to get involved
with a crazy girl, anyway? She pushes the limits and constantly rides the
edge.”
“And she does it fearlessly.
That’s what I love about her. She’s not like any other girl I’ve ever met.
She’s got spunk. She’s smart, spontaneous, a thrill-seeker, a risk-taker, and
she loads of fun. Did I mention the fact she drives me absolutely insane? And
her smile… There is nothing sexier to me than a woman’s smile.”
“I think it’s the thrill of the
hunt. Men are aggressive by nature, and once we devour our prey, we’re off on
the next hunt.”
“It’s more than that. She
challenges me…inspires me like no other girl.”
“She’s toxic,” he said.
“Try….intoxicating.”
He threw his arms up in the air.
“Okay, I give up. I think you’ve lost your mind because all you think of is the
crazy sex you’ll get.”
“Crazy in the best way possible.
But she’s not a whore. Crazy, yes. Loose? No. She doesn’t sleep around. She’s
just wild and carefree.”
He nodded. “Selene’s like a wild
horse that can’t be broken.”
“I’ll break her. You can count on
that.”
“You tame her? Good luck.
Besides, the wild ones are rarely relationship material anyway.”
“Who says I’m looking for a
relationship?”

Lexy Timms Billionaire Biker
Tall, lean and curved in all the
right places. Her breasts were on full display in a crisp red top that
contrasted perfectly with her wide-legged white slacks. Her blondish-brown hair
had been twisted into a perfect fishtail braid and the expensive, oversized
sunglasses on her face hid her eyes but not her straight nose or full, lush
mouth.
She was definitely in the wrong
place. Morgan had seen her type before, curious rich girls from the other side
of town slumming it up in the biker bar, grabbing their chests in excitement as
they eagerly stepped in the door, blinking from the strong sunlight outside.
None of them ever dared to cross
that threshold during the night hours, they came in the day—usually with one or
two of their friends, all of them giggling madly at their own daring. Morgan
tossed back a shot and watched her. He wasn’t the only one. Heads turned all
over the place.
During the day the crowd was not
so much biker as it was folks who just liked to ride. There was a definitive
difference. Most of the people seated at the tables or who bellied up to the
bar didn’t wear a patch, and if they did, those colors belonged to small
obscure clubs, little vanity clubs made up of rich guys who wanted to be bikers
on the weekends, and hedge managers during the week. The woman strolling across
the floor fit in with them, for all he knew she was there to meet one of them.
Her perfume hit his nose. It was
spicy and rich, and her ass was on full display as she leaned across the bar,
causing those pants to pull taut across the pert slopes of her bottom. His eyes
went right to those firm, uplifted cheeks.
Her voice, a sweet and slightly
husky thing, filtered through the air as she said, “I’d like Maker’s Mark and a
twist of lemon. Just a twist, not a huge wedge please.”
Jack, the burly bartender, gave
her a filthy look and stalked off. Her red-hued nails tapped the bar. Morgan
shook his head and took another sip of his drink. He had more important things
to think about than this woman, but he couldn’t seem to get his mind off her,
or his eyes either.
“He’s probably going to give me
the whole damn lemon.”
There was amusement in her voice.
Her fingers lay on the bar and he stared down at them before saying, “You’ll be
lucky if he only gives you one.”
“Damn! Hoisted by my own petard.
Or pickiness. Whichever suits the current situation.”
He chuckled, surprised by her
wit. She whipped the glasses off to reveal a set of baby-blue eyes surrounded
by a thick fringe of black lashes. He looked away. He had to keep his mind
focused. Dealing with Craig was always tricky, dealing with Craig when he’d
pulled some dumb-fuck move that could get the whole club in trouble was worse.
The last thing he needed was to be distracted.
But what a freakin’ beautiful
disaster of a distraction.
Jack came back and plunked a
heavy tumbler filled with two fingers of whiskey onto the counter. He held the
lemon half up in the air and gave it a hard twist. Morgan winced as a long
squirt of lemon juice filled the glass, causing the lovely amber whiskey to
turn cloudy.
Jack said, “With a twist, just
like you ordered.”
Her hand shot out. She picked up
the glass and turned it up, drinking down the vile-looking concoction. She set
the glass down and gave Jack a creamy smile. “Perfect. Thanks. How much?”
She had guts. Morgan admired that
and he saw the unwilling grin tugging at Jack’s lips. Morgan leaned in. “I got
it.”
Jack nodded and walked away.
Her head turned. “Thanks but
that’s not necessary.”
A closer look revealed her youth.
Early twenties. Morgan grinned and shook his head. “I can’t believe you drank
that.”
Her smile widened, revealing
square white teeth. “I won’t believe it either later, I’m sure.”
He laughed, he couldn’t help it.
He also couldn’t help asking, “No offense but what brought you in here, to the
Orphan Pint bar?”
She sighed. “I’m escaping my
boss.”
“I see.”
She checked her watch and rolled
her eyes. “I should probably get back.”
“Or quit your job.”
“Wouldn’t that be nice? Just chuck
it all and walk away.”
“It is.” His eyes met hers. “What
do you do, if you don’t mind me asking?”
Her teeth went to her bottom lip.
“I’m an assistant.”
“Like a personal assistant?”
“Yes.” She thought for a moment
and added, “For the Wilkes family.”

Just Love Me – By C.C. Cartwright
Justin POV.
I’m enjoying a day at the beach
and my sister Kylie shows up with her little posse of girlfriends. None of them
are much to look at, except for one, and she looks vaguely familiar.
I admire her from a distance for
a good part of the day. As I play volleyball with my buddies, she comes and
watches. Of course I put on a show for her. You see, I’m Gods gift to women. I
have a hard, lean body, which I work hard at maintaining, and the chicks dig
it. I see Kylie’s sexy friend looking in my direction.
We take a break and decide to go
and cool off in the waves. While my buddies and I are body surfing, I see
Kylie’s enticing friend standing at the water’s edge in her teeny weeny bikini.
I decide to venture onto shore and approach her as I walk out of the water.
“Hi Justin, don’t you remember
me?” I hear a very feminine voice greet me as I walk up to her.
“Wait a minute, is that you,
Sloane?” I finally realize who she is.
“Yes, don’t you recognize me?”
She shoves me teasingly with her soft hands, making the skin on my wet chest
sizzle.
“You’ve grown up,” I say, making
no bones about eyeing her from head to toe and she actually blushes.
“So I’ve been told,” she says.
“How long has it been since I’ve
laid eyes on you?” I eye her again.
“Too long,” she says in her
seductive voice.
“What are you up to now?”
“I’m in my last year at
Pepperdine,” she replies. So she is still local for me and my ears perk up, as
well as other parts of my body.
“How about you?”
“I live and work in LA now,” I
reply.
“Oh, that’s right, Kylie told
me.”
The amount of sex appeal she
packs in that petite frame of hers would have a guy hard in seconds. I’m
already dying to get in between those long, sexy legs of hers. I can tell she
knows it by the way she moves and tilts her head and pierces me with those
sultry, exotic eyes of hers. The way her lips move leave me fantasizing about
having them wrapped around me.
Her voice is the perfect
combination of deep and throaty, yet it has a flirtatious lilt to it. Seriously,
she could bottle it and sell it like an expensive perfume.
From eyeing her in her tiny
bikini, which leaves little to the imagination, I peg her measurements to be
34-24-34 of pure perfection. She’s probably a C cup, a large handful, which
looks even larger on her svelte body. She catches me eyeing her like a dog does
with a bone. Yes, I want to consume her. But I have to approach this one just
right. She definitely gets her share of attention and can pick and choose who
she lets into her bed, would be my guess.
Judging by the way she sways
those curvaceous hips of hers, she ain’t a virgin. She has probably heard every
line that a guy on the make can throw her way. I need to think of my approach,
although I have never had a problem getting what I want from the female
persuasion. Girls flock to me and my rock hard body that I keep up by hitting
the gym several times a week.
On top of her enticing physical
attributes, she is articulate and smart. I find this to add to her appeal, not
take away from it. I’m not like most guys, I need a girl who is smart and will
challenge me to hold my interest. She tells me she’s still in school, studying
business law at Pepperdine.
I myself just graduated. Set
myself in a cool bachelor pad overlooking the city in one of those high-rise
condos in Downtown LA. I just started working at Goldman Sachs as an
up-and-coming Investment Banker.
As our beach party winds down, I
manage to score Sloane’s number and a date with her for next Saturday night.
I'll be counting the days until I can get my hands on that sinful body of hers.

Badass - Kendra Wild
Nicole POV.
“Another drink?” Nick asked.
“Sure,” Nicole told him. After
the next drink, she wandered off to the restroom. She couldn’t get him out of
her head. She felt a strange connection with the ex-Special Forces bodyguard
she’d just met before the flight. It was rare for her to meet someone and feel
comfortable with them so quickly, but there was something about him, something
strangely familiar that made her feel safe at a time she should have been
scared out of her mind. She knew that once they landed at JFK, they would go
their separate ways, and she’d probably never see him again. That made their
connection even more intriguing.
So many things a girl can do with
a man she won’t ever see again…
When Nicole got back to her seat,
she leaned over and whispered to him. He leaned into her a little so he could
hear. “You know what I’ve never done?” she asked.
“What’s that?” he asked.
“I’m still not a member of the
Mile High Club.” She couldn’t believe she actually admitted that to a complete
stranger. It had to be the alcohol.
Nick sat up and looked at her
with one eyebrow cocked. “Are you serious?”
“Yes. How about you?”
“Me? I’m a card-carrying platinum
member,” he said with gravelly laugh. “So how come you’ve never done it on a
plane?”
“I never had the nerve to try.
I’ve actually always worried about being caught.”
Nick chuckled. “Don’t worry. They
don’t make you parachute out afterward or anything like that,” he assured her.
He looked her up and down, and playfully added, “Tell you what. I’d be happy to
help you get initiated if you’d like.”
“Now, are you serious?” she
asked, giggling that she was seriously considering having sex with this guy she
met less than an hour ago. And in the airplane restroom, no less.
“Yes I am.” He said it like he’d
done it a hundred times. “I’ll help you out. Give me a minute, then come back
there and join me. It’ll look too suspicious if we walk back there together.”
He stood up and walked down the
aisle to the restroom. Nicole watched his broad, firm body work its way through
the cabin. Broad shoulders, fit back, strong arms, and tight ass. She imagined
holding on to those buns of steel while he gave it to her in the bathroom. She
couldn’t believe it was about to happen, but she was so ready. She was wet just
thinking about it.
Her anticipation grew while she
waited for him to get to the back of the plane. It took what felt like forever
as she waited for him to give her a signal to let her know when to come back
there. It was unfair, she thought. Maybe she should have gone back there first.
That way she wouldn’t be drawing too much attention to herself by staring back
through the aisle every few seconds.
Then, she saw it. The door opened
slightly. That must have been the signal.

Bad Boy Biker - Bella Wild
Jace POV.
“You’re not just another ex-con
biker thug,” Jessie continued. "You’re different. There’s something about
you,” she said.
Jace laughed. “Maybe it’s the
wine.”
Jessie looked at her glass, which
was empty again, and agreed. “Maybe you’re right. It’s definitely got me
feeling a little more open. I should probably get going before I have too
much.”
“So early? We were just starting
to actually talk,” Jace protested. He was not ready to let her walk out that
door, not now that he finally got her guard down.
“I think I should,” Jessie told
him, getting up from the table. “I’ll make a deal with you. If you sign that
paper and drop it by my office, I’ll consider another date sometime.”
Jace got the feeling she would
anyway, even if he didn’t sign the request to be reassigned to another
therapist.
“That’s tempting.” He stood up to
walk her to the door. “I’ll think about it. Are you okay to drive?”
“I’ll walk. I don’t live far from
here.”
He stretched his arm across the
doorway. “I can’t let you do that. This is downtown Phoenix. It ain’t safe this
time of night.”
Jessie looked up at him and
slowly ran her fingers across his outstretched arm, letting them come to rest
at his shoulder blade. “I walk at night all the time. Don’t worry so much.”
“You’re in no condition to be out
alone tonight.”
They stood face-to-face in the
doorway now. Even in heels, Jessie was still a lot shorter than Jace.
“You’re not who I thought you
were at all, Jace Roma. I had you pegged for this bad-boy, womanizing,
tough-guy biker, but you’re not, are you? You’re gentle and warm.”
“Maybe.” Jace laughed.
“You have this rough and tough
exterior so that no one will see that kind, caring person underneath, but when
you let people in, it’s clear you’re a decent man, Jace Roma.”
“If you’re going to analyze me,
maybe I should take the couch,” he said.
“How about your bed?” Jessie
asked as she threw her arms around him and leaned into him.
He looked down into her eyes and
smiled. “Are you sure it’s not the wine talking?”
“What if it is? I’m not
unconscious, so it's me, not the alcohol. I think this time I can get what I
want for a change.”
Jace was not going to let the
moment pass. His lips eagerly moved to hers. Jace wrapped his arms around her
waist and pulled her closer. He could feel the longing in her body. She pressed
hard against him. Her desire was so fierce he felt it spreading to him, too,
and it wasn’t just the wine. Jessie finally pulled all that sexual tension from
their sessions right up to the surface.
Her lips tasted of red wine and
long, lonely nights. She felt like raw passion. She had been wanting him for a
long time. He could feel that as she pressed her hips against him. All that
need wrapped up in her tight little body, coiled up in her toned muscles and
held in place by her pants suit. And now, he was the right someone she needed
to let that wild desire run free.

Kylie Walker: Indecent Desires Excerpt
Crystal and Joe followed Tanya
around the two story building as she hastily pointed out each office,
elevators, restrooms, and conference rooms. It was a busy place and everyone
seemed to be rushing in or out of somewhere. There were a lot of cops around,
both in uniforms and in suits and ties with their gold shields attached at
their waists. Crystal was happy that the offices all seemed to have names on
them because the huge cement building was shaped like a horseshoe and one
office looked almost the same as the next. She showed them where the law
library was and informed them that a lot of their work would be done from
there, researching case law for John. She took them into the kitchenette area
and introduced them to several paralegals who were there having their
breakfast. She pointed out the executive dining area and Eric Steel’s suite of
offices. She looked directly at Crystal as she said, “Stay away from him.
You’ll have no need to be down here.”
Even knowing Eric Steel’s
reputation, the way that Tanya said it was slightly offensive to Crystal. She
shook it off however by the time Tanya led them back towards John’s side of the
building. They stopped in front of a small office that said, “Intern” on the
door. It was two doors down from John’s office.
“Joe, this will be yours. It
should be stocked with everything you’ll need and I left some casefiles on the
desk with notes on them. Most of it is research like we talked about earlier in
the library. When you finish with it, bring the files back up to me, my office
is the one just outside John’s door.”
“Thanks,” Joe said. He pushed
open the door and Crystal looked inside. There was a small window along the
back wall that had thick, frosted glass in it. The desk was dark oak and looked
well used and there was a black leather chair behind it. The computer, printer
and fax machine also all looked used and possibly even out of date. In the
center of the desk was a small stack of files. Joe grinned at her and went in
and took a seat behind the desk. Crystal suppressed a smile as she thought
about her friend Debbie. The difference in pay and benefits was one of the
reasons Debbie told her she wanted to be a defense attorney rather than a
prosecutor. If she saw this office and the equipment still from the nineties in
it she would say, “I told you so.”
Tanya was halfway down the hall
when she stopped and turned to look at Crystal. “Are you coming?” She spat the
words out. Crystal smiled again and hurried along after her. She thought about
asking the woman what her problem was, but she didn’t want to have words with
her boss’s assistant the first day on the job. She followed her to the office
next to John’s and with a roll of her eyes Tanya said, “John requested that I
put you in here. I suppose that way you and he can share memories about your
mother and what not.”
Bingo! That was her problem. She
knew who Crystal’s mother was and assumed that was the only reason John gave
her the internship. Crystal smiled at her again. That seemed to bother her a
lot. Good! She didn’t have to explain herself to this woman, or feel bad that
her mother made good connections through her own hard work. “This will be
perfect, thank you, Tanya.” Crystal said it in a dismissive tone of voice and
Tanya set her jaw as it fought back a retort.

Biker Blues Baby
Instantly she was awash in grief.
Tears pouring silently down her cheek. That’s when she realized something else.
She wanted to be pregnant. She really wanted this baby. Morgan’s baby. Dear
god, please don’t let these symptoms be from the flue. She so wanted this to be
real.
Beside herself, she sat up and
found the tissues. She blew her nose trying to pull it all together.
And cried harder.
She heard the muffled cry before
she was gently picked up and turned around until she was in his lap with him
leaning against the headboard. With his gently massages and soft murmurs she
couldn’t hold the tidal wave back and she cried and cried.
When the storm finally passed,
and lord only knew where it had come from or why, she lay against his chest, so
damn sad.
“What’s the matter, Jazz?”
His rich voice was full of worry
and held a tinge of fear. Of course. He had no idea what was wrong with her.
“I’m okay,” she whispered. “I’m
just going through a rough patch.”
He held her close. “And here I
thought we’d gone through the worst life could throw at us.”
A burp of a laugh erupted from
her mouth. “Oh we did. We did.”
“And yet, here you are, terrified
to tell me what’s going on.”
He knew her so well. Hell no one
else could have seen the fear in her actions. No one but him. She hadn’t even
seen it. But he was right. She was terrified.
Terrified that this was too big.
For her to do. For them to do. Motherhood, oh my God was there anything bigger.
The the commitment? All so big, so important. Up until now she’d brushed it off
as being something she’d do eventually, but now… she shook her head now… it was
too soon. She needed time. She wasn’t ready. She wasn’t good enough to be a
mother. The thought petrified her. The responsibility.
She wanted to be the best mom
ever. But for the babies sake not hers. Morgan would be a wonderful father.
If he wanted to be.
“Shh. Whatever is wrong, we’ll
fix it.”
She nodded and reached up to kiss
him. If her kiss was a little demanding he didn’t seem to care. If it was a
little too passionate, he didn’t seem to mind. If her actions were hurried and
rougher than normal he seemed to be right there with her.
In fact, he moved her back a
step, his breathing hard choppy. “Hold on. Let me get out of these clothes.”
Only she followed as he tried to
retreat and was reefing on his belt buckled as he pulled his shirt over his
head. “I’ve got this,” he said, his voice thick.
She smiled and let her hand slip
down to encase the bulge under her fingers. And stroked it up and down over the
thick denim. He swore and opened his jeans zipper. Her fingers dove in.
He laughed but it ended as a
groan as her fingers encircled him. “Jesus sweetheart, you’re killing me.”
She laughed. “Not yet.” With her
other hand she pulled his boxers down so his erection stood in front of her
with nothing between them.
Then she lowered his head.

Salvation
She woke to find herself tucked
under blankets and wrapped in an inferno of body heat. Lord, it felt good.
After last night, she was worried that she’d never be warm again. Now she
reveled in the heat. And the comfort.
The stranger held her against his
chest, his heavy thigh thrown across her legs. Pinning her in place. She lay
there quietly. Although she was pinned, the sensation wasn’t oppressive. In
fact, it was comforting. He wasn’t pressing down on her to keep her in place.
Rather, it was a more gentle letting her know that he was there for her.
Who was this man who moved her
so? Who made her wonder about a future after all? Could she have one without
the pain and the fear? Was it possible to leave Greg and go on to have a
different relationship with someone else? She’d never wanted to before. She
still didn’t now. But this man… he made her want so much more than what she
had.
Not that she knew what she had
any longer. Greg would kill her next time he saw her. If he knew about her fall
off the bridge, her night in a stranger’s bed, he’d kill her and take great
pleasure in it.
If he found out.
And she had to stop him from
finding out.
“Who are you?” she whispered
soundlessly into the room filled with the early morning glow of dawn, knowing
he was asleep and couldn’t hear her. She studied his face, so relaxed in
repose. He was a beautiful male with his square jaw and high cheekbones and the
bright eyes she remembered well. They were a razor blue that caught her and held
her in his grasp.
He was a man who went after what
he wanted then reached out and took it.
But never against another’s will.
She was proof of that.
What did he do for a living? His
hands showed calluses, as if he worked with them or had a hobby he indulged in
often. He’d do well coaxing something out of nothing. There was a tenderness to
him, though he’d probably hate her for saying so.
She smiled then.
A deep growl slid out from the
perfect chiseled lips beside her. “What are you smiling about?”
She froze, the smile dropping
off.
“Don’t be silent now,” the same
barely-awake gravel voice murmured. “I’d like to know.”
She wanted to answer. She
struggled to articulate an answer. Instead, she gave a statement of being. “I’m
alive.”
His lashes lifted slowly. His
head rested not a foot from hers, his gaze alert and penetrating.
“And that’s a good thing.”
She hesitated then offered a
small smile. “It is.” She took a deep breath and added, “Thank you.”
