SEALs of Honor: Hawk by best selling author Dale Mayer

SEALs of Honor: Hawk
Blurb:
Finding a dead man is a hell of a way to start a holiday.
Growing up, Hawk was always a bit of a wild card. Once he became a SEAL, he found his niche in the world. But the wild man was still there, under wraps …and waiting for a match. Back home for a few days, he realizes a new, darker element has moved in.
And it appears to involve the freckle-faced redhead he never forgot.
Mia remembers her best friend’s brother. After all, what woman could forget him? He was like fireworks lighting up her life. Taking her breath away and making her heart beat faster. But the version that came home was harder, more dangerous ... and sexy as hell.
Good thing he's on their side as the town explodes in violence with Mia caught in the middle.

Excerpt 1
She pulled out her phone and called her father, her gaze on her uncle, her heart not sure how to react after the shock, the relief and now back to panic. The phone was picked up and before anyone could answer, she jumped in with, “Dad, you there?”
“I’m here,” he answered. “How was the caving?”
She closed her eyes, tears collecting in the corners as his warm caring voice filled her ears and her heart. “It was okay. But there’s something I have to tell you.”
“Oh, what’s that?”
“It’s Uncle Gerry. He’s been shot.”
She heard her father suck in his breath hard. Then a half cough. “What? How? Are you sure?”
“He’s been shot in the head.”
“Damn it. Where?” His voice fumed in a mixture of pain and anger.
“I’m in your office staring down at him now. Eva’s brother Hawk, found him.”
“Hawk’s in town?” His voice regained some strength as he registered Hawk’s name.
“Yes, he’s called the authorities but they haven’t arrived yet.” No surprise there.
“Apparently a cache of weapons was found in one of the caves.” Her father muttered. “Gerry mentioned something about bombs and chemicals this morning when I talked to him.”
“After the ambulance comes to collect him, I’ll take you down to the hospital so you can see him.”
“Yeah.” He cleared his throat. “I’d appreciate that.”
Hearing the roughness in his voice, she felt her own tears burn her eyes all over again as she said good-bye. She turned to the others staring at her and shrugged. “He needs to say good-bye.”
Hawk nodded once. She turned her back on him and clasped her hands around her knees and rocked in place. With Eva’s arm wrapped around her, she sat in silence.
Unlike Hawk. Who paced.
Mia looked over at Eva. “How long has he been here?”
“He got into town just an hour ago. I was expecting him today, just not when.”
“He’s on days off?”
“Yeah.” Mia grinned. “Five days.”
“Nice.” She studied him covertly. She’d heard about the arrogant, so damn sexy SEALs.
She had nothing against men. Even loved a few. But some were just more than others.
Hawk was one of those.
More. Everything. More presence. More male. More power.
But he was a SEAL. The ultimate of warriors. So not for her.
She’d never felt like she was enough. Could ever be enough. So she’d never entered the race. Why would she? She hated to fail and it was a given she’d fail that one.

Excerpt 2
Hawk snorted. “It’s going to be hours before they get the intel they need in order to mobilize anything. What if this guy is so destructive right now because he has something going down? He said today is delivery day. He’s not going to let anything get in his way.”
“It already has,” Swede said. “We need background on Gerry.”
“Yeah, we do. I deliberately didn’t even bring my laptop with me. And so far I haven’t exactly had a half hour to search my phone for information.”
“Na. Cooper is on it now. When you told me it was Gerry not Gordon I got him started. Gerry is a whole different issue. I don’t like to think he came bringing trouble with him.”
“He did.” Hawk realized he hadn’t filled him in on that part Gordon had shared. He quickly added in the rest of the information.
“Then we got bigger trouble than we first thought. We need the team and our gear.”
“It’s unofficial.”
“Screw that. It’s family.”
Hawk pulled out into the passing lane and sped up to get past the panel truck ahead. It was trundling along at a slow pace like it had nothing to worry about. But it would be easy to hide weapons in it too. Now he was going to be looking at every vehicle like it was a terrorist bomb. Shit.
The turnoff was just up ahead, he went to brake then realized that the big truck behind him was slowing too. Damn it. He hit the gas and blew past the turnoff. The truck slowed more and turned onto Gordon’s driveway. The house was in the back, set far under the grove of huge evergreen trees making for great camouflage. Also it was completely hidden from the road. He slowed, told Swede what was happening and pulled a U-turn on the road.
“I’m fifteen minutes away.”
“Better make that five. She’s not going to have much more than that.”
He pulled the Jeep onto the driveway, going deep into the trees as far out of sight as he could. He shut off the engine and slipped out into the woods and started toward the house. There were no sounds. The house was silent. Everyone was in the back with the truck. He crept through the trees to the back of the house and realized there were indications of loading and unloading there. He eyed the front. He could sneak inside and see what was going on, but it would be harder to get out fast enough if things blew up.
And they were going to.
It was just how and what side the bodies would fall that concerned him.
Therefore…he crept to the far side of the house. One man stood on the side, a cigarette in his hand, a cell-phone to his ear, talking. “Yeah, we’re going to load up in a few minutes. The remaining cache is about twenty minutes from here. An hour or so to load, then we should be on our way in just over two hours.” He nodded. “Will do.”
And he hung up. He turned to the others. “Let’s lock and load. I said we’d be leaving town in two hours.”
“And what about the girl and her father.”
“Shoot them.”

Excerpt 3
She turned away and saw her father awake. Bursting into tears, she raced to give him a big hug.
“I’m so glad you’re okay,” she said through her sobs.
“I’m so very glad you and Hawk were both there to help.”
“You mean Hawk. He rescued both of us,” she admitted.
“Good. Glad he did.” Her father reached up and rubbed his temple. “My head is pounding. It’s going to be days before I feel up to opening the store.”
“Are you still going to?” she asked quietly.
He raised an eyebrow. “Why wouldn’t I?”
“Well, your brother was shot in the store, it was ransacked, the guns were stolen and your cache at home was also stolen.”
He shrugged. “It was all insured.”
She nodded but inside it bothered her. “I’m not sure I like the idea of you selling guns anymore.”
“You never did.” He pursed his lips and studied her. “Nervous now? That’s not like you.”
“Watching those men…” She shuddered. “It did make me think.”
He shook his head. “It’s not the guns. It’s the people–”
“People who use them.” She groaned. “Yeah, I know.”
“Lucky you, you’re free to leave,” he said. “What are you going to do now?”
“As you’re fine and safe here, I’m going home. I got a pass from the doctor as long as I rest.” She stood up and reached over to hug him. “Love you, Dad.”
“Love you too, Mia.” He smiled up at her. “This will be a bad memory soon.”
“I hope so.”
With a small wave, she turned and walked out. Her energy was flagging. She needed to grab a cab. Outside she realized it was late. How was it she hadn’t understood that? Just staring out at the dark night she realized she probably should have stayed for the night. But that was fear talking.
Better to go home and face it. Now, should she go to her place or to her father’s house? No, she wasn’t going back there for a while. She needed time so she wouldn’t see her father’s body lying crumpled on the ground every time she was there.
Outside the hospital, she stood at the front doors and stared across the parking lot. There were cabs waiting on the front curb. She walked over to one, but it drove away as she approached.
A truck drove between her and the next taxi. She tried to walk around it but a man hopped out. She shifted out of his way.
The man called out to her. “Excuse me.”
She spun and looked at him, “Yes.”
“I think this is for you.” He held out a package.
She frowned. “From who?”
“A guy in a black Jeep.”
Her face lit up. Hawk. “Oh,” she said hopefully and reached out to take it. “Thank you so much for delivering–”
She never saw the blow, never felt the air cut off from her lungs. Nor did the pain hit her awareness quickly. Instead it was like a slow motion movie as she watched her body fall into his waiting arms. She knew something was wrong but couldn’t seem to connect the weird grip on her neck with the numbness of her legs.
His voice, concerned and helpful, called to her. “Oh dear. Are you all right? Here, let me help you up.”
She was boosted into the back seat of the truck where she toppled forward into the foot well. Her head hit the seat cushion and bounced off to slide to the floor. She lay there, her eyes open, her brain aware, her mind no longer functioning.
